Like many of my fellow fashion bloggers, I attended the fabulous and spectacular premier party for the new Glam Magazine by Minnu Palen, Maitreya and others yesterday. The publication is available from their website already, and will be distributed in-world on Monday. In their own words the point of the magazine is to mirror real life fashion publications and focus more on style, rather than current fashion trends. Additionally, they stated that they want to educate and challenge the fashion groups within Second Life.
There was some concern expressed by the attending press audience that there was a conflict of interests as the publication was run and owned not by an independent publisher, but major fashion brands — would their reporting be unbiased, or geared towards their own brands? Glam Magazine editor, Miabella Foxely, responded by saying “This is not a marketing plot, but more of a way to bring great designers together to raise the bar. There are many different designers featured in this as well as future issues”.
In my opinion, the magazine is beautifully executed, really raising the bar in that respect, however, I couldn’t help but notice that (as far as I could tell) every single non-advert model wore Minnu Model Skins. Nevertheless, this publication will definitely sit firmly on my radar and I’m very curious to see how it develops in future editions.
There was also a huge fashion show, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay for all of it — but please check out the various blogs on the Fashion Feed of SL many of which have wonderful pictures of the clothes.
Enough talk and back to the look. Another aspect of the party was that the attendees were asked to wear a minimum of prims and scripts to help reduce the lag, and it was something of a challenge to put together a decent outfit somewhere between glam, sexy and professional for the occasion.
As hair is usually the most prim-heavy, I started by trying out a number of wigs, and then settled on this one from ETD that manages super-chic at a mere 46 prims. A flexi skirt would have added prims, so I decided for pants and a sexy top; the pants are sleek and grey for a little bit of a professional feel and the top, with its more than generous cleavage and satiny texture, added the glam and the sexy — only 2 prims (pant legs) to add to my count = 48. Now, that cleavage really needed something to cover up even just a little bit of skin and I found this perfect necklace, which is textured on the Jacket Layer and doesn’t use up a single prim! Shoes are usually also prim-heavy, but I got these sculpted black stilettos with only 10 prims each — Voila, 68 prims! Not bad, eh?

Edit - 17Feb2008:
It seems we all have some misconceptions about what causes lag and how to reduce it during big events like fashion shows. I strongly recommend that you read this article on the subject by the brilliant Gwyneth Llewelyn — it was education for me.

YSL “Elle” Launch Party
Here then, is my account of last night’s perfume launch “Elle” by YSL.
I definitely had a pleasant time, we were treated to a presentation including a speech and a rather cool promo video. I liked the build of the sim, all in bold fuchsia to reflect the design of the bottle. Residents can explore the sim for the next 3 months after which it will close. During the time it stays open it will be dedicated to art, which YSL staff were keen to stress was something they were focusing on as sponsors of FIAC. Residents can submit artwork for exhibition through e-mail to laurent@andreamedia.com.
Continues below the cut.
